A soap solution (C17H35COONa, 1.2 * 10⁻³ M) forms a colloidal sol. On average, 2.4 * 10¹³ micelles are present in 1 mm³ of the solution. Assuming all stearate ions are in micelles, what is the average number of stearate ions per micelle? (Avogadro's number = 6 * 10²³)

  1. 30
  2. 40
  3. 50
  4. 60

Correct answer: 30

Solution

In 1 mm³ (= 10⁻⁶ L) at 1.2*10⁻³ M: moles of C17H35COONa = 1.2*10⁻³ * 10⁻⁶ = 1.2*10⁻⁹ mol. Number of stearate ions = 1.2*10⁻⁹ * 6*10²³ = 7.2*10¹⁴. With 2.4*10¹³ micelles in 1 mm³, average stearate ions per micelle = 7.2*10¹⁴ / 2.4*10¹³ = 30.
