A closed vessel contains helium gas and ozone (O3) at a total pressure of P atm. The molar ratio of He to O3 is 1:1. If helium is completely removed from the vessel at constant temperature, the new pressure of the remaining gas will be:
- (A) 0.5 P atm
- (B) 0.75 P atm
- (C) 0.25 P atm
- (D) P atm
Correct answer: (A) 0.5 P atm
Solution
Since He and O3 are in a 1:1 molar ratio, by Dalton's law each contributes P/2 to the total pressure. Removing He leaves only O3 at pressure P/2 = 0.5P atm.
