Consider the redox reaction: 2S2O3²- + I2 -> S4O6²- + 2I-. Which of the following statements is/are correct? (A) 2S2O3²- gets oxidised to S4O6²- (B) I2 gets reduced to I- (C) I2 gets oxidised to I- (D) Both (A) and (B) are correct

  1. 2S2O3²− gets oxidised to S4O6²−
  2. I2 gets reduced to I−
  3. I2 gets oxidised to I−
  4. Both (A) & (B)

Correct answer: Both (A) & (B)

Solution

S in S2O3²- has avg oxidation state +2, rising to +2.5 in S4O6²-, so thiosulphate is oxidised. Iodine goes from 0 in I2 to -1 in I-, so I2 is reduced. Both A and B are correct.
