The population of a town is 15,000. It decreases by 10% in the first year and increases by 20% in the second year. Find the final population.

Correct answer: 16,200

Solution

After a 10% decrease, the population becomes 15,000 × 0.9 = 13,500. Then a 20% increase gives 13,500 × 1.2 = 16,200. So the final population is 16,200.
