5% of one number (X) is 25% more than another number (Y). If the difference between the numbers is 96, then find the value of X?

Correct answer: 100

Solution

5% of X = 25% more than Y → 0.05X = 1.25Y → X = 25Y. Difference: X - Y = 96 → 25Y - Y = 24Y = 96 → Y = 4. Therefore X = 25 × 4 = 100.
