In each question, two equations numbered (I) and (II) are given. Solve both equations and mark the appropriate answer. I. $2x^2 - 17x + 36 = 0$ II. $y^2 - y - 12 = 0$

  1. If $x=y$ or no relation can be established
  2. If $x > y$
  3. If $x < y$
  4. If $x \ge y$

Correct answer: If $x \ge y$

Solution

From I, $2x^2-17x+36=0$ gives $x=4$ or $x=\frac{9}{2}$. From II, $y^2-y-12=0$ gives $y=4$ or $y=-3$. Since the smallest possible value of $x$ is 4 and the largest possible value of $y$ is 4, we can conclude $x \ge y$.
