A and B take part in a 100 m race. A runs at 5 km/h. A gives B a start of 8 m and still beats him by 8 seconds. The speed of B is:

  1. 5.15 kmph
  2. 4.14 kmph
  3. 4.25 kmph
  4. 4.4 kmph

Correct answer: 4.14 kmph

Solution

A’s speed is 5 km/h = \(\frac{5000}{3600}\) m/s = \(\frac{25}{18}\) m/s. So A takes \(100 \div (25/18)=72\) seconds to finish. B starts 8 m ahead, so he runs 92 m in 80 seconds; hence his speed is \(92/80=1.15\) m/s = 4.14 km/h.
