The following arrangement consists of an ideal transformer and an attenuator that attenuates by a factor of 0.8. An AC voltage $V_{WX}=100$ V is applied across $WX$ to get an open-circuit voltage $V_{YZ}$ across $YZ$. Next, an AC voltage $V_{YZ}=100$ V is applied across $YZ$ to get an open-circuit voltage $V_{WX}$ across $WX$. Then, $V_{YZ}/V_{WX}$ and $V'_{WX}/V'_{YZ}$ are respectively.
- 125/100 and 80/100
- 100/125 and 80/100
- 100/125 and 100/125
- 80/100 and 80/100
Correct answer: 125/100 and 80/100
Solution
If the attenuator has a transmission factor of 0.8, then the forward voltage ratio is 0.8 and the reverse ratio is its reciprocal, 1/0.8=1.25. Therefore the two requested ratios are $125/100$ and $80/100$.
