A thin wire is used to construct all the edges of a cube of 1 m side by bending, cutting, and soldering the wire. If the wire is 12 m long, what is the minimum number of cuts required to construct the wire frame of the cube?
- 3
- 4
- 6
- 12
Correct answer: 4
Solution
To form all 12 edges of a cube using a single wire, the wire must be divided into pieces that can be arranged along an Euler-type traversal of the edge network. The minimum arrangement requires 4 cuts, producing 5 pieces that can be joined to cover all edges with the least interruption.
