A 30-litre mixture of oil and kerosene contains oil and kerosene in the ratio 2:1. Some quantity of kerosene is added, changing the ratio to 1:2. What is the quantity of kerosene added?

Solution

Initially, oil = 20 L and kerosene = 10 L. If x litres of kerosene are added, the new ratio becomes 1:2, so 20 : (10 + x) = 1 : 2. Solving gives 10 + x = 40, hence x = 30 L.
