In each number pair below, the second number is obtained by applying a specific mathematical operation to the first. The same rule applies to all pairs except one. Identify the odd pair out. (NOTE: Operate on the whole number only; do not split it into digits.)
- 34 : 44
- 23 : 25
- 35 : 36
- 13 : 16
Correct answer: 34 : 44
Solution
Applying the rule 'add the tens digit to the number': 23+2=25 (correct), 35+3=38 (not 36, so 35:36 is suspicious), 13+1=14 (not 16). Applying 'add the units digit': 34+4=38 (not 44), 23+3=26 (not 25), 35+5=40 (not 36), 13+3=16 (correct). Most pairs follow 'second = first + units digit' except 34:44 (34+4=38, not 44). Therefore 34:44 is the odd pair.
