A ball is launched straight up with an initial speed of 10 m/s. Neglecting air resistance and taking g = 9.8 m/s^2, what is the greatest height it attains?
- 1.02 m
- 5.10 m
- 10.2 m
- 20.4 m
Correct answer: 5.10 m
Solution
At maximum height the final velocity is 0. Using v^2 = u^2 - 2gh gives h = u^2 / (2g) = 100/19.6 = 5.10 m. Hence the ball rises 5.10 m.
