A luminous object is placed at a distance of 30 cm from the convex lens of focal length 20 cm. On the other side of the lens, at what distance from the lens a convex mirror of radius of curvature 10 cm be placed in order to have an upright image of the object coincident with it?

  1. 12 cm
  2. 30 cm
  3. 50 cm
  4. 60 cm

Correct answer: 30 cm

Solution

The lens forms an image using the lens formula, and the convex mirror reflects it back. For the image to coincide with the object, the mirror must be placed at the same distance as the image formed by the lens. Using the lens formula and mirror formula, the correct placement is 30 cm.
