Two simple pendulums of length 5m and 20m respectively are given small linear displacement in one direction at the same time. They will again be in the phase when the pendulum of shorter length has completed ...... oscillations.

  1. 5
  2. 1
  3. 2
  4. 3

Correct answer: 2

Solution

The time period of a simple pendulum is proportional to the square root of its length. The ratio of the time periods of the two pendulums is √(20/5) = 2. Thus, the shorter pendulum will complete 2 oscillations in the same time the longer pendulum completes 1 oscillation, bringing them back in phase.
