There is a flat uniform triangular plate ABC such that AB = 4 cm, BC = 3 cm and angle ABC = 90°. The moment of inertia of the plate about AB, BC and CA as axis is respectively I₁, I₂ and I₃. Which one of the following is true?

  1. I₃ > I₂
  2. I₂ > I₁
  3. I₃ > I₁ > I₂
  4. I₁ > I₂

Correct answer: I₃ > I₁ > I₂

Solution

The moment of inertia depends on the distribution of mass relative to the axis. For a triangular plate, the axis along the hypotenuse (CA) will have the largest moment of inertia (I₃), followed by the axis along AB (I₁), and then BC (I₂). Thus, I₃ > I₁ > I₂.
