ABC is an equilateral triangle with O as its centre. F₁, F₂ and F₃ represent three forces acting along the sides AB, BC and AC respectively. If the total torque about O is zero the magnitude of F₃ is:

1. F₁ + F₂

4. 2(F₁ + F₂)

Correct answer: F₁ + F₂

Solution

For the net torque about the center O to be zero, the sum of the torques due to F₁, F₂, and F₃ must cancel out. Since the forces act along the sides of the equilateral triangle, symmetry and vector addition imply that F₃ = F₁ + F₂.
