A solid sphere of radius R is placed on a smooth horizontal surface. A horizontal force F is applied at height h from the lowest point. For the maximum acceleration of the centre of mass:

Correct answer: h = R

Solution

For maximum acceleration of the center of mass, the applied force should not cause any torque about the center of mass. This happens when the force is applied at the topmost point of the sphere, i.e., h = R.
