Two cars moving in opposite directions approach each other with speed of 22 m/s and 16.5 m/s respectively. The driver of the first car blows a horn having a frequency 400 Hz. The frequency heard by the driver of the second car is (velocity of sound 340 m/s):
- 361 Hz
- 411 Hz
- 448 Hz
- 350 Hz
Correct answer: 448 Hz
Solution
The Doppler Effect formula for sound is used here: f' = f * (v + v₀) / (v - vₛ), where v is the speed of sound, v₀ is the speed of the observer, and vₛ is the speed of the source. Substituting the values: f' = 400 * (340 + 16.5) / (340 - 22) = 448 Hz.
