A light wave is travelling along the y-direction. If the corresponding electric field vector at any time is along the x-axis, the direction of the magnetic field vector at that time is along
- y-axis
- x-axis
- +z-axis
- -z-axis
Correct answer: -z-axis
Solution
For an electromagnetic wave, the propagation direction is given by \(\vec E \times \vec B\). Here \(\vec E\) is along +x and the wave travels along +y, so \(\vec B\) must be along -z because \(\hat i \times (-\hat k)=\hat j\).
