The average e.m.f. induced in a coil, in which the current changes from 2 A to 4 A in 0.05 s, is 8 V. What is the self-inductance of the coil?

  1. 0.1 H
  2. 0.2 H
  3. 0.4 H
  4. 0.8 H

Correct answer: 0.2 H

Solution

For a coil, the magnitude of induced emf is $e = L\,\frac{di}{dt}$. Here, $\Delta I = 4-2 = 2$ A and $\Delta t = 0.05$ s, so $\frac{di}{dt} = 40$ A/s. Thus $L = \frac{8}{40} = 0.2$ H.
