In the figure shown, block A collides head-on with another block B at rest. The mass of B is twice the mass of A. If block A stops after the collision, the coefficient of restitution is:

  1. 0.5
  2. 1
  3. 0.25
  4. It is not possible

Correct answer: 0.5

Solution

Let mass of A be $m$ and mass of B be $2m$. If A stops, then by momentum conservation: $mu = 2mV$, so $V=u/2$. Coefficient of restitution is $e=\frac{V-0}{u-0}=\frac{1}{2}$.
