A body is moving towards a finite body which is initially at rest and collides with it. In the absence of any external impulsive force, it is not possible that:

1. both the bodies come to rest
2. both the bodies move after collision
3. the moving body comes to rest and the stationary body starts moving
4. the stationary body remains stationary, the moving body changes its velocity

Correct answer: both the bodies come to rest

Solution

With no external impulsive force, total momentum of the system must remain conserved. Since one body is initially moving, the initial total momentum is non-zero, so both bodies cannot end up at rest. The other outcomes can occur depending on the nature of collision.
