According to Brewster's law, when a beam of unpolarised light is reflected from a transparent medium of refractive index (μ2), the reflected light is completely polarised at a certain angle of incidence called the angle of polarisation (ib). tan ib = μ2/μ1. For air, μ1 = 1. tan ib = μ2 > 1 ⇒ tan ib > 1 ⇒ 90° > ib > 45°.
- tan ib = μ2/μ1
- tan ib = μ1/μ2
- ib = 90°
- ib = 45°
Correct answer: tan ib = μ2/μ1
Solution
According to Brewster's law, the tangent of the angle of polarisation (ib) is equal to the refractive index of the second medium (μ2) relative to the first medium (μ1). Hence, tan ib = μ2/μ1.
