Assertion If a pure enantiomer of the following ester is hydrolysed in dilute alkaline medium, a pure enantiomer of alcohol is obtained. Reason Under the given condition of hydrolysis, acyl oxygen heterolysis always takes place.

  1. Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
  2. Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
  3. Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect
  4. Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct

Correct answer: Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion

Solution

In dilute alkaline hydrolysis of an ester, the reaction proceeds by acyl–oxygen cleavage, not by breaking the alkyl–oxygen bond. Therefore, if the alcohol part is chiral and the ester is a pure enantiomer, the alcohol formed remains a pure enantiomer as well.
