Which one of the following statements is correct with respect to kidney function regulation?
- When someone drinks lot of water, ADH release is suppressed.
- Exposure to cold temperature blood flow stimulates formation of Angiotensin II.
- An increase in glomerular blood flow stimulates formation of Angiotensin II.
- During summer when body loses lot of water by evaporation, the release of ADH is suppressed.
Correct answer: When someone drinks lot of water, ADH release is suppressed.
Solution
Drinking a lot of water lowers plasma osmolality, so the hypothalamus reduces ADH secretion. With less ADH, the kidneys reabsorb less water and excrete more dilute urine.
