JEE Main — the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) — is the gateway to the NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes (GFTIs), and is also the qualifying stage for JEE Advanced (the IIT entrance). It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), usually in two sessions a year, with the better of the two scores (by NTA percentile) counting.
Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) is a computer-based test covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from the Class 11 and 12 syllabus. Because lakhs of students appear and ranks are decided on normalised percentiles, speed and accuracy across all three subjects are essential.
