Equal masses of three different liquids are poured into three identical cylindrical vessels A, B and C. Their densities satisfy rhoA < rhoB < rhoC. The force exerted on the base of the vessel is:

  1. maximum in vessel A
  2. maximum in vessel B
  3. maximum in vessel C
  4. equal in all the vessels

Correct answer: equal in all the vessels

Solution

For a cylindrical vessel of base area A, the liquid column height is h = m/(rho*A). Pressure at base = rho*g*h = rho*g*m/(rho*A) = m*g/A. The density cancels, so the force on the base = pressure*A = m*g, equal in all three since masses and base areas are identical.
