A capillary tube is carried from Earth to the Moon's surface. Given that the acceleration due to gravity on Earth is 6 times that on the Moon, the rise of liquid in the capillary on the Moon is:

  1. six times that on the Earth's surface.
  2. 1/6 that on the Earth's surface.
  3. equal to that on the Earth's surface.
  4. zero

Correct answer: six times that on the Earth's surface.

Solution

Capillary rise h = 2T cos(theta)/(rho g r), which is inversely proportional to g. On the Moon g is one-sixth that on Earth, so the rise becomes 6 times larger. Hence the rise on the Moon is six times that on Earth.
