A tall cylinder of height 20 m is filled completely with water. A small hole is made in the side wall close to the bottom. Find the speed (in m/s) with which water flows out through this hole.

Solution

By Torricelli's theorem (Bernoulli applied to the free surface and the hole), the efflux speed equals that of a body freely falling through the depth of the hole below the free surface: v = sqrt(2*g*h).
