In a hydraulic press the two pistons have cross-sectional areas of 1 cm² (thin arm) and 10 cm² (thick arm). A 5 N force is pressed onto the liquid in the thin arm. How large a force must act on the liquid in the thick arm to keep the liquid in equilibrium?

Solution
Equal pressure transmission gives F1/A1 = F2/A2, so the larger piston needs a force scaled by the area ratio.
