The shearing stress between adjacent horizontal layers of water in a river is 1.5 milli-newton per square metre. If the coefficient of viscosity of water is eta = 1*10⁻³ Pa*s, the velocity gradient (in s⁻¹) is:

  1. 1.5
  2. 3
  3. 0.7
  4. 1

Correct answer: 1.5

Solution

Newton's law of viscosity gives shear stress = eta*(dv/dx). So dv/dx = stress/eta = (1.5*10⁻³ N/m²)/(1*10⁻³ Pa*s) = 1.5 s⁻¹.
