Two water pipes P and Q, of diameters 2*10⁻² m and 4*10⁻² m respectively, are connected in series along the same supply line. Compared with the flow speed in pipe Q, the speed of water in pipe P is:

Solution
By continuity, A_P*v_P = A_Q*v_Q. Area scales as d², so v_P/v_Q = (d_Q/d_P)² = (4/2)² = 4. Thus the speed in the narrower pipe P is 4 times that in Q.
