2 kg of ice at -20 deg C is mixed with 5 kg of water at 20 deg C. Using specific heat of ice = 0.5 cal/g/deg C, specific heat of water = 1 cal/g/deg C and latent heat of fusion of ice = 80 cal/g, find the final amount of liquid water in the mixture.
- 6 kg
- 5 kg
- 4 kg
- 2 kg
Correct answer: 6 kg
Solution
The water can supply enough heat to warm the ice to 0 deg C and melt 1 kg of the 2 kg of ice, so the final liquid water is 5 kg + 1 kg = 6 kg (with 1 kg ice remaining at 0 deg C).
