A light rigid horizontal bar AB is suspended from two vertical wires, one steel and one brass, each 2.00 m long. A mass of 10 kg is hung from the centre of AB so that the bar stays horizontal. Taking g = 9.8 m/s², what is the tension in each supporting wire?

  1. 24.5 N
  2. 49 N
  3. 98 N
  4. 196 N

Correct answer: 49 N

Solution

Because the mass hangs from the midpoint of the bar and the bar remains horizontal, the two wires share the load equally. Each wire therefore supports half of the total weight of the suspended mass.
