A student plotting stress-strain graphs for two materials P and Q accidentally puts strain on the y-axis and stress on the x-axis (as shown in the figure). Based on such a (swapped-axis) plot, which of the following statements is/are correct?
- P has more tensile strength than Q
- P is more ductile than Q
- P is more brittle than Q
- Young's modulus of P is greater than that of Q
Correct answer: P has more tensile strength than Q
Solution
With stress on the x-axis, the curve that reaches the larger stress value has greater tensile strength; for this standard problem P reaches higher stress, so P has more tensile strength than Q (this is the accepted correct statement).
