Equal amounts of heat are supplied to equal masses of ethyl alcohol and water. The water's temperature rises by 25 degC. Given that the specific heat of ethyl alcohol is half that of water, by how much does the alcohol's temperature rise?
- 12.5 degC
- 25 degC
- 50 degC
- It depends on the rate of energy transfer.
Correct answer: 50 degC
Solution
Since Q = m c deltaT is equal and c(alcohol) = c(water)/2, the alcohol's temperature rise is double, i.e. 50 degC.
