A material has Poisson's ratio 0.3. If a rod made of it undergoes a longitudinal strain of 25 * 10⁻³, what is the percentage increase in its volume?

Correct answer: 1%

Solution

dV/V = (1 - 2*0.3) * 25e-3 = 0.4 * 0.025 = 0.01, i.e. a 1% increase in volume.
