A solid metallic cube has a total surface area of 24 m². When uniformly heated so that its temperature rises by 10 deg C, find the increase in its volume. (Coefficient of linear expansion alpha = 5.0 x 10⁻⁴ per deg C.)

Solution

Side a = 2 m (V = 8 m³); Delta V = 8 * (3*5e-4) * 10 = 0.12 m³ = 1.2 x 10⁵ cm³.
