A rod of negligible heat capacity has length 20 cm, cross-sectional area 1.0 cm² and thermal conductivity 200 W/m-degC. One end is kept at 0 degC while the other end's temperature is raised slowly and linearly from 0 degC to 60 degC over 10 minutes. With no heat lost through the sides, find the total heat conducted through the rod in these 10 minutes.
- 600 J
- 900 J
- 1500 J
- 1800 J
Correct answer: 1800 J
Solution
With average hot-end temperature 30 degC, average heat current = KA*30/L = 3 W; over 600 s this gives 1800 J.
