A glass container of volume 100 cm³ is completely filled with mercury and then heated by 25 degC. Find the volume of mercury that overflows. Linear expansion coefficient of glass = 1.8 * 10⁻⁶ /degC; volume expansion coefficient of mercury = 1.8 * 10⁻⁴ /degC.

  1. 0.4365 cm³
  2. 1.6 cm³
  3. 1.74 cm³
  4. 2.61 cm³

Correct answer: 0.4365 cm³

Solution

The overflow equals V0(gamma_Hg - 3*alpha_glass)*dT = 100*(1.8e-4 - 5.4e-6)*25 = 0.4365 cm³.
