When a rubber cord is stretched its change in volume is negligible compared with the change in its length. What is the Poisson's ratio of rubber?

Correct answer: 0.5

Solution

If volume is conserved during stretching, 1 - 2*sigma = 0, so Poisson's ratio sigma = 0.5.
