You have four resistors of 2 ohm, 4 ohm, 6 ohm and 8 ohm. How must they be combined to give a net resistance of 46/3 ohm?

  1. Put 4 ohm parallel with 6 ohm, and place 2 ohm and 8 ohm in series with that combination
  2. Put 6 ohm parallel with 8 ohm, and place 2 ohm and 4 ohm in series with that combination
  3. Put 2 ohm parallel with 6 ohm, and place 4 ohm and 8 ohm in series with that combination
  4. Put 2 ohm parallel with 4 ohm, and place 6 ohm and 8 ohm in series with that combination

Correct answer: Put 2 ohm parallel with 4 ohm, and place 6 ohm and 8 ohm in series with that combination

Solution

Putting 2 ohm and 4 ohm in parallel gives 4/3 ohm, and adding 6 ohm and 8 ohm in series gives 14 + 4/3 = 46/3 ohm.
