Two resistors R1 and R2, each 60 ohm, are joined in series. A potential difference of 120 V is maintained across the combination (A to B). A voltmeter of resistance 120 ohm is connected across one of the resistors (between C and D). What will the voltmeter read?

  1. 48 V
  2. 24 V
  3. 40 V
  4. None

Correct answer: 48 V

Solution

Voltmeter 120 ohm parallel with 60 ohm = 40 ohm. Series with the other 60 ohm gives total 100 ohm. Voltage across the 40 ohm section = 120 * 40/100 = 48 V.
