A bomb of mass 3m sits at the centre of a closed box that has mass 3m and length 4L. The bomb bursts into two fragments of mass m and 2m which fly off in opposite directions and finally stick to the two opposite inner walls of the box. The box rests on a frictionless horizontal floor. How far does the box itself slide during this process?
- L/3
- L/2
- 2L/3
- L
Correct answer: L/3
Solution
With the centre of mass fixed, the unequal fragments forcing themselves onto opposite walls shift the box by L/3.
