Given below are two statements: Statement I: Acceleration due to earth’s gravity decreases as you go ‘up’ or ‘down’ from earth’s surface. Statement II: Acceleration due to earth’s gravity is same at a height ‘h’ and depth ‘d’ from earth’s surface, if h = d. In the light of above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.

  1. Both Statement I and II are correct
  2. Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect
  3. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  4. Statement I is incorrect but statement II is correct

Correct answer: Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect

Solution

Statement I is correct because the acceleration due to gravity decreases as you move away from the Earth's surface and increases as you go deeper into the Earth. However, Statement II is incorrect because the gravitational acceleration at a height 'h' above the surface is not the same as at a depth 'd' below the surface, even if h equals d.
