Given below are two statements: Statement I : Rotation of the earth shows effect on the value of acceleration due to gravity (g). Statement II : The effect of rotation of the earth on the value of 'g' at the equator is minimum and at the pole is maximum. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below
- Statement I is false but statement II is true
- Both Statement I and Statement II are true
- Both Statement I and Statement II are false
- Statement I is true but statement II is false
Correct answer: Statement I is true but statement II is false
Solution
Statement I is correct because the rotation of the Earth does affect the value of acceleration due to gravity, making it slightly less at the equator compared to the poles. However, Statement II is incorrect because the effect of Earth's rotation actually reduces the value of 'g' more at the equator than at the poles, where the effect is negligible.
