Two identical strings X and Z made of same material have tension Tₓ and T_z in them. Their fundamental frequencies are 450 Hz and 300 Hz, respectively, then the ratio Tₓ/T_z is:

1. 0.44
2. 1.5
3. 2.25
4. 1.25

Correct answer: 2.25

Solution

For identical strings f ~ sqrt(T), so Tx/Tz = (fx/fz)^2 = (450/300)^2 = 1.5^2 = 2.25.
