A whistle producing sound waves of frequencies 9500 Hz and above is approaching a stationary person with speed v m s⁻¹. The velocity of sound in air is 300 m s⁻¹. If the person can hear frequencies upto a maximum of 10,000 Hz, the maximum value of v upto which he can hear whistle is

  1. 15√2 m s⁻¹
  2. 15/√2 m s⁻¹
  3. 15 m s⁻¹
  4. 30 m s⁻¹

Correct answer: 15 m s⁻¹

Solution

The maximum frequency the person can hear is 10,000 Hz, and using the Doppler effect formula, we can determine the speed at which the whistle must be moving to produce this frequency when approaching the listener. By solving the equation, we find that the maximum speed v that allows the person to still hear the whistle is 15 m/s.
