Using the remainder theorem, find the remainder when f(x) = 3x³ + 6x² - 4x - 5 is divided by (x + 3).

  1. -20
  2. 0
  3. 16
  4. -2

Correct answer: -20

Solution

By the remainder theorem, dividing by (x + 3) gives remainder f(-3). f(-3) = 3*(-27) + 6*(9) - 4*(-3) - 5 = -81 + 54 + 12 - 5 = -20.
