The normal at a point P on the rectangular hyperbola x² - y² = 4 meets the transverse axis at A and the conjugate axis at B, with C the centre of the hyperbola. Which relation holds?

  1. PA = PC
  2. PA = PB only and not PC
  3. PB = 2PC
  4. AB = 4PC

Correct answer: PA = PC

Solution

For x² - y² = 4 the normal at P meets the axes at A(2x1, 0) and B(0, 2y1); since C = (0,0) and P = (x1, y1), all of PA, PB and PC equal sqrt(x1² + y1²), so PA = PC.
